Yes, I have been around and seen many things, and done a lot more... if you're wondering, it all started way back when....on page 3! Heh, heh!
To give you a little background, I was born in Glendale CA, back in 1968, and lived in Burbank until the summer of '79, whereupon I moved to Minnesota. There I grew up, until I enlisted in the Marine Corps, and shipped out for boot camp in January of 1987. Since then, I have had the opportunity to serve my country in many climes and places. That service has enabled me to see a lot of the world, as well as a lot of the United States(45 states, 31 countries). In addition, I served on the front in Kuwait.....as an artillery section chief. There are those who would condemn such as myself for my participation in Desert Shield/Storm, yet I ask them to answer this question: If not me, then who else? Responsibility is indeed a bittersweet beverage, but most people still suck down cough syrup when they have to, right?
At any rate, I transferred down to South Carolina in January of 1994, for orders to Parris Island. For those of you who are familiar with "Full Metal Jacket", you have the advantage on others who are as yet unaware as to what a Drill Instructor is. I trained recruits to the best of my ability, wringing out the most effort, and tempering the best qualities....the spent ones I discarded, knowing the futility of depending on them should another conflict arise. Along this route I myself battled fatigue, the norm for working 19-hour days for entire weeks, and endured many Congressional investigations, the result of mothers who were overly concerned with the treatment their young boys were receiving. Mothers of America seem not to understand the purpose of recruit training....it is designed to weed out the weak and train the able and polish the strong. It is a test of manhood the likes of which few have been or ever will be privy to, and though the price is great----------the prize is greater. At the end of recruit training, the new Marine stands tall, confident in his ability to improvise, adapt, and overcome, secure in the knowledge that he has not been handed a title, but earned it, through countless days of blood, sweat, and pain. There are some as would say that we are brainwashed.....perhaps......would you actively seek to spend 24 hours a day for 6 weeks training in a desert? Would you make a decision to be forward deployed in countries you've never heard of, knowing it would be 6 months or longer until you returned? After over 12 years of service, I can say that I do not feel brainwashed....only a deep sense of commitment, and the willingness to make personal sacrifices which most others would be loathe to. I do the dirty work, and do not ask your assistance, and therefore will not ask your approval. Those who do support us, I am grateful for....they are the lifeblood of this nation, and I can never show the extent of my gratitude. And though there are many who will never understand it, freedom will continue to have a flavor the protected will never know.
